Laser hair removal cost
What clinics and medspas charge per session and per body area, how many sessions a result takes, and why two quotes for the same area can be three times apart.
Single session, one body area, US spa price lists
$95 to $450per session
Sample prices collected by GoodRx from US spas (bikini line to back), read 24 October 2026; ASPS average for laser skin treatments $697.
What a session costs, by body area
Laser hair removal is priced per session and per area, and the area is what moves the price: a bikini line takes minutes, a back takes most of an hour. GoodRx collected single-session prices from spa price lists in several US cities; they are examples of what is charged, not a national average.
| Body area | Sample single-session prices | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Bikini line | $95, $138, $149 | Pasadena CA, New York NY, Northern Virginia |
| Back | $210, $288, $450 | Utah, New York NY, Northern Virginia |
| Full leg (illustration used by GoodRx) | $200 | one leg, one session |
| Full body package | $450, $799 | Los Angeles CA (women), New York NY |
Prices are national figures from the sources listed at the end of the page, with their date. Your quote depends on your area and your job.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes a different kind of figure: an average of $697 for laser skin treatments, laser hair removal included, drawn from its member statistics. The ASPS says this is the practitioner's fee alone and does not include related expenses. It is a useful upper reference for a physician-led practice; a medspa session for a small area costs a fraction of it.
How many sessions, and what the whole course costs
A laser disables hair follicles that are in their growth phase, and only a share of follicles are growing at any time, so one session never clears an area. GoodRx puts the usual course at three to six sessions, four to six weeks apart, with more for dark hair on dark skin or for hormonal areas. The arithmetic is simple and worth doing before the first appointment: GoodRx's own illustration is a full leg at $200 a session and eight sessions, $1,600 for one leg and $3,200 for both. A bikini line at $95 to $149 over six sessions is $570 to $894. A back at $210 to $450 over six sessions is $1,260 to $2,700.
Most clinics sell packages of six or eight sessions at a discount against single visits. Ask for the package price for your area, the number of sessions it includes, and what a touch-up session costs afterwards, then compare clinics on the total, not on the headline single-session figure.
What moves the price
The ASPS lists four drivers: the expertise and qualifications of the person performing the treatment, the type of procedure, the time and effort the area requires, and the geographic location of the office. GoodRx adds the type of laser (diode, alexandrite, Nd:YAG), the size of the area, numbing cream, and post-care products. In practice three things explain most of a quote:
| Driver | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Who holds the laser | A dermatologist or plastic surgeon charges a physician fee; a licensed technician in a medspa charges less. State rules on who may operate a laser vary. |
| Skin and hair type | Dark skin needs a laser that spares pigment in the skin (Nd:YAG), fewer clinics offer it, and more sessions may be needed; light hair responds poorly to any laser. |
| The city | The same back session is $210 in Utah and $450 in Northern Virginia in GoodRx's samples: rent and demand set the floor. |
Insurance, financing and what is not in the quote
Laser hair removal is cosmetic, so health insurance does not pay for it except in medical indications: GoodRx cites a trial of laser hair depilation to prevent the recurrence of pilonidal disease, for which a dermatologist may argue coverage. Everything else is out of pocket, which is why clinics push packages and financing. Before signing, ask what happens to prepaid sessions if you stop, whether the price includes numbing cream and a consultation, and what a maintenance session will cost a year later: regrowth is normal and the course rarely ends at the last package session.
Questions that make quotes comparable
Ask each clinic the same six things and write the answers down: which laser and wavelength, who operates it and under whose licence, the price per session for your exact area, the package price and the number of sessions in it, the interval between sessions, and the cost of a touch-up. Two quotes that differ by $150 a session can be the same price per course once the package size and the touch-ups are counted. A clinic that cannot name its laser or its operator's qualification is answering a different question from the one you asked.
Questions people ask
How much does laser hair removal cost per session?
Spa prices collected by GoodRx run from about $95 for a bikini line to $450 for a back in a single session, and full-body packages from $450 to $799 per session. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports an average of $697 for laser skin treatments including hair removal, a figure that covers the practitioner's fee only.
How many sessions does laser hair removal take?
Three to six sessions is typical according to GoodRx, scheduled four to six weeks apart, because the laser only disables hair that is in its growth phase. Dark hair on dark skin, hormonal areas and coarse hair can take more.
Does insurance cover laser hair removal?
It is a cosmetic procedure, so health insurance does not cover it in the usual case. Exceptions exist for medical indications, such as hair removal to prevent recurrence of pilonidal disease, which GoodRx cites from a clinical trial protocol; your dermatologist and insurer decide that case by case.
Why does the price vary so much from one clinic to another?
The ASPS lists the drivers: the qualifications of the person doing the treatment, the type of laser, the time the area takes, and the location of the office. A dermatologist with an alexandrite laser in Manhattan and a medspa technician with a diode laser in Utah are selling different services at different rents.
Is a package cheaper than paying per session?
Clinics usually price a block of six sessions below six single visits, and GoodRx lists package prices well under the sum of single sessions. Since most people need several sessions anyway, ask for the package price for your area and divide by the number of sessions to compare.
